Metal packages for fiber optics and discrete devices are often machined from low expansion alloys such as kovar and invar. These alloys are difficult to machine and the complex features of the metal packages require long machining cycle times.

PIM is increasingly used as the alternative manufacturing solution to machining, offering improved product performance and unique advantages in terms of overall reduction in package size, circuit isolation, forming of non-uniform geometries, elimination of handling of multiple components through product integration, and cost savings.
